Edgar Alan Poe Museum, Richmond, VA – 3/12/2017

March 12, 2017 (Sunday)

Didn’t sleep well in the squeaky bed, plus woke up with a headache. Keep telling Michael we’re on a tight schedule and we can’t afford to get sick or have anything happen.

Got up early and got moving. We were packing and loaded by 9:30 AM. We talked about what we wanted and/or should do before we could check into our new “home” in Williamsburg at around 4:00 PM. We decided to go back to Richmond, Virginia and check out the “Edgar Allan Poe Museum.” The drive was a little over 50 miles and took about an hour and fifteen minutes. We arrived a little early for their 11:00 AM opening and waited in the car. We were surprised at how many people were waiting at the door to go inside when it opened. (The cost was $5.00 each – the old people’s discount.) The weather started out a little chilly but got a little warmer (37-43).

On the road again….
Uneventful drive, our favorite.
Edie is enjoying murals these days.

Our first view of the museum.
The fence sets the tone, which is black.
Turns out it is four different buildings. Poe lived in many different places during his life.

We were given a sheet of paper for the self-guided tour. There was also an option to get another type tour off your smart phone but I believe you had to pay for each section of the tour with that one. The self-guided one we took had plenty of information to read and check out. What a dark and tortured soul he was. I had always heard (and thought) he was a drug addict and had mental issues. For sure he had mental issues, but he was more a drinker and didn’t do drugs (as far as the museum knew). He married his cousin when he was 27, she was 13. She died when she was 24, no children. He died a couple of years later. Very sad life. Michael and I have decided we don’t want to do any more “downer” type museums – holocaust, etc. Just too depressing.

He was small in stature and did not require huge space.
It makes me wonder what Stephen King’s Museum will look like.
1737 construction.
Not his tomb.
The dinkiest door knobs I have ever seen or grabbed.
Our Poe selfie.
As in life, odd stories surrounded Poe in death and burial.
Much memorized.
Store and ticket office where photographs were allowed.

She ended up buying a raven hand puppet.

I ended up buying a book.
In the restroom. Fun, the raven, the ghostly woman and the shadow of the raven behind.
The Garden
One of two black cats that live here and greet guests.
Of course, skull and crossbones collar.

We left the museum and headed to the local Costco. We were looking for replacement coffee mugs (Contigo – the kind that stay hot for hours and don’t spill). Mine is 6 – 7 years old and not working properly and needs to be replaced. We were disappointed in that they didn’t have them. We figure eventually we’ll find them. We ended up getting some nuts and had lunch there.

Michael drove straight to the new home, Marriott’s Manor Club at Ford’s Colony. Very lovely. It was still too early to check in so we went to a nearby supermarket and got some milk and cereal. We didn’t want to buy a lot of groceries because we weren’t sure about the kitchen (if we had one or not). By the time we got back to the resort, it was close to check-in time so we asked and were able to get into our unit. We also were directed over to the timeshare presentation desk and decided to do it as we have never done a Marriott’s timeshare presentation. I even went over all my notes on the ones we have taken and we haven’t done one. Should be interesting.

We found our new home.
Lovely grounds.

Check in
Pretty woman getting us registered.
Parking pass area.
Complimentary drinks.
Nice picture on the wall.

The unit is lovely, but it’s a studio and the kitchen is strictly a sink, small refrigerator, toaster and a microwave. Glad we didn’t buy many groceries. The bed is very comfortable (we had to check it out by taking a short nap). The resort looks lovely and it appears they have lots of activities to keep you busy.

Our kitchen.
A big hall closet.
Nice bath.
Lots of towels.
Big TV, small table.
Very comfortable bed.
Nice couch and coffee table.
Fun folded towel.
So nice. Framed and hanging in the bathroom.
Great work.
