Tallahassee, FL to Byron, GA – 2/18/2017
February 18, 2017 (Saturday)
Woke up to rain! Weather in the South is very strange, but we are grateful to be here and not in California right now. Sounds just horrible and our kids will be without power for a week or so.
We got up and drove to a nearby Denny’s Restaurant for breakfast.
After that we drove the few miles to the Florida State Capitol in Tallahassee, actually the old Capitol. The new Capitol is closed on weekends due to security reasons. We found a parking spot a few blocks away and walked until we could find the entrance to the old Capitol. We walked by some beautiful flowers, trees with lots of moss, and some sculptures of dolphins swimming near the new Capitol. Nice walk and the weather had cleared up and was actually nice.
Once at the old Capitol, Michael and I both laughed that the awnings (red and white stripped) looked like it was a huge ice cream shop; and the doors looked like an ad for Target. Very different. The Capitol itself was very underwhelming and mostly a museum. They are doing quite a bit of construction but not sure what they are going to do.
As we were walking back around to our car we heard some people playing bagpipes. We were hoping it wasn’t a funeral and it wasn’t, just them practicing. Very nice.
The drive today was a little over 200 miles to Byron, Georgia – about half-way to Columbia, South Carolina (another Capitol). Google maps took us on quite a few back roads and I really enjoyed them as they were clear, wide enough, and pretty scenery. We saw cute little towns, lots of abandoned places with weeds and jungle like things growing. Pretty neat.
We got into Byron at about 5:00 PM and decided to get something to eat before we got into our room. We found a little Mexican place nearby and it was pretty darn good and inexpensive.
Byron is a cute little town but it looks like it’s disappearing little by little. Our hotel home for the night is spacious, clean, and nice Super 8 (Wyndham Rewards).
That was our day. Hope yours was great!
