San Antonio, Texas – 2/12/2017

February 12, 2017 (Sunday)

Slept in. The bed was very comfortable. I had put in my earplugs so it was nice and quiet for me. Michael said he slept okay except his shoulder has been hurting him and he had to get up and get some Ibuprofen around 3 AM.

We had coffee in our room, and Michael had a bowl of cereal. We lazed around for awhile and then we left our room around 11 AM to head to the River Walk, a less than ten mile drive. We found parking ($10.00 for the whole day) and walked down to the River Walk.

San Antonio.
A few of these old timers went by.

We know we are in a high tourist area.
The intersections with stairs down to the river walk sport this sign.

As we were walking towards the stairs to head down, both Michael and I were impressed with San Antonio. We decided we wanted to come back and explore more as it reminds us a lot of Chicago. We even talked to a segway tour operator about taking a tour (they were full), and decided to do it when we come back.

We walked down and were quite surprised and pleased to see how beautiful the River Walk was. So lovely. Whoever did the planning did an excellent job and we hope they got some medals or some reward for doing such a wonderful job. As we were walking down the River Walk, we were approached by some “body snatchers” from Wyndham. We told them we had just done a presentation in Oceanside and we weren’t interested. They kept raising the goodies until we couldn’t say no. What got us was a certificate for a week in a resort for $75.00. We knew we could use that, as well as the gift card they offered.

An entrance.
It is like a magical world opens up when you go down to the river level and see so much beauty, food, and people.
The buildings, tile, shops all surfaces are attractive. The trees and flowers make it wonderful.
Bridges, fountains and boats are spread throughout.
The young woman to the right was our body snatcher. She made us offers we couldn’t refuse.

Once we were signed up, we were turned over to a young man named “General Washington” (his actual name, very cool). Really nice young man who has worked for Wyndham for quite some time. He walked us up to the shuttle that took us over to the presentation.

New made to look old and old made to look new.
Pretty woman walking with General Washington (his actual name) to the shuttle pickup for the presentation.
Nice signage everywhere.

Once at the presentation area, we did the paperwork and then were separated from everyone else because we were “owners.” A young lady came over and took us next door and introduced us to Jonathan, followed by Brian. They were both nice, friendly, and seemed very knowledgeable. Brian especially seemed to know his stuff and tried to explain a few things. He understood that we didn’t want to buy and got us out within an hour.

Drink center. Well supplied.
Waiting to be assigned a salesperson.

We left the Wyndham and walked down the River Walk. So very beautiful. We enjoyed all that we saw (there is much more).  For being a February and a little overcast, it was very busy. There were so many things to see and experience – restaurants, stores, birds, flowers, statues, hotels – beautiful.  We then walked to the Alamo, a pretty short distance.

Diving bird drying its wings in the air.
Lots of nice architecture here.
Pretty woman on the move.
A very well engineered waterway.
The walk wasn’t far, especially along the river way. It did surprise us how much you can walk on nice walkways outside the downtown river walk.
Interesting buildings.
Kind of a Venice feel in some places.
So many pretty sights as I walk around.
Private parking for a boat?
Attractive bridges.
Residences and hotels.
Up to street level.
Private residences, businesses.
No graffiti anywhere. Not even the two tone paint where it was painted over.
Eye candy everywhere.
Beautiful twin waterfalls and pond.
Stairs all along the way going up to streets and businesses.
Commemorates the site of the naming of San Antonio.
Artful designs, stairs cutting and curving across, very fun for the eye.
Artful touches everywhere.
Up top, still interesting.
We have seen this type of art work in other places.
The Alamo.

Lots of people out and about. In front of the Alamo were line dancers and Christian people yelling the word of God. Haven’t quite wrapped my head around that yet. Afterwards we walked to a hotel we had been told about by Jonathan, called the “Crockett Hotel.” We wanted to get a drink but they weren’t open until 4 PM and it was only a little after 3 PM. We wandered around the lobby area and were pleased to see how animal friendly it was, as it had a water bowl for dogs.

The Alamo Cenotaph is huge and is a memorial to the battle at the Alamo.
Great detail.
Dancers doing a line dance.
Big carving inside the Crockett Hotel.
Lobby of the Crockett.
A dog water bowl inside the Crockett Hotel.
Nice.

We wanted something to drink so we walked (and, according to Michael, walked and walked and walked) until we found a fun looking bar and went inside. When we sat down we were given the best basket of popcorn ever, and then we ordered our drinks.

So festive.
We are definitely coming back.
Our selfie.
So nice.

We walked back to our car at the parking garage and drove to a nearby Cracker Barrel. Sunday they have a really good chicken dinner special that we love. Michael got it and gave me a few bites. I opted to get a bowl of pinto beans and a coca cola cake for dessert. Delicious (as usual).

Sunday fried chicken was for me. I’ve had my fill for quite a while now.

That was our day. Hope yours was great!
