Sierra Vista, AZ to San Antonio, TX – 2/10-11/2017

February 10-11, 2017 (Friday and Saturday)

These were both long travel days in the car. The first day was the longest, about 425 miles. The weather was warm and beautiful, the roads were good, the traffic was light – but a long drive through Arizona, New Mexico, and then into Texas. Still think the Texas miles are the longest.

It is hard to note geology at 75 mile per hour but these rounded rocks grab my imagination. Dew settles on the pointed parts that stick out. Freezing occurs and the edges are cracked into a fine sand and fall away leaving a rounded stone behind.
Giant roadrunner, now just need a giant Wylie Coyote.
Entering New Mexico.

We stopped for linner at a Golden Corral in Las Cruces. It was brand new and quite lovely. Great selection of just about everything you could want or need (actually much more than anyone could need). Michael and I talked and decided we didn’t want to go to the Golden Corral very often because we eat way too much.

A new Golden Corral. It was full of way too much good food.

We got into our hotel in Van Horn, Texas and were a little worried because the area looked a little dirty and warn out. The hotel, however, was quite nice. Spacious, clean rooms. Very comfortable bed.

We got up and left for San Antonio, Texas. This was another 400 plus mile day. Our first stop was at a gas station to get gas and some breakfast. Not sure where it was but the coffee was a Texas blend and it was surprisingly good. Michael and I decided they must have put some kind of chili powder in it, along with cinnamon. We both got a breakfast – Michael got a burrito and I got a croissant. We stopped one other time to go potty, and then on into San Antonio.

Nice lone star state sign.
Long long road.
We think this flame was about 50 feet high. A lot of gas being wasted.

Our hotel, Day’s Inn, is another budget hotel but clean and we feel safe and comfortable here. There are several restaurants nearby but we opted to check in, unpack a little (we’ll be here for three nights), and then head out to a nearby “El Pollo Loco” restaurant for a salad.

Pretty woman letting us in.
