Playa Del Carmen to Isla Cozumel – 1/22/2017

January 22, 2017 (Sunday)

Checked out of the Playa del Carmen condo. Such a nice place in the perfect location to the beach and 5th Avenue. You did need earplugs because of the loud music playing from the bars in the area, but small sacrifice for the great area. We drove to the Hertz rental car location near the ferry terminal and turned in the car. We opted to pay a small fee (something like $25.00 US) to drop off the car in Playa del Carmen rather than drive all the way to Cancun and then take a bus or taxi back to Playa del Carmen to take the ferry over to Cozumel.

Commercial gauntlet on the way to the ferry.

We got our tickets for the ferry to Cozumel (64 pesos per person). We opted to take a cheap ferry rather than the Ultramar. Wish now we had taken the Ultramar because we heard the ride was much smoother, and Aaron and Arla had said they liked the Ultramar. The ferry we took was very rough and you could hear (and see) people throwing up all over the place. You know it’s gonna be bad when the employees are going around handing out barf bags. Michael even said he was getting a little sick, but I think it was because of the lady close to us throwing up and being very vocal about it. We were sure glad when we got into Cozumel (about half an hour ferry ride).

Ferry dock.
The beach goes for miles and you can walk it if you are of a mind.
Playa del Carmen statuary on the beach by the ferry terminal.
Getting on the ferry selfie.
Nice and big when you first get on, then turns into a vomit comet once you get going.

Once in Cozumel we walked around. There were tons of taxis wanting us to use them but we opted to walk around awhile. We wanted to go to a burrito place (vegan) the kids had scoped out, but once we got there it was closed. We then walked across the road and just a little ways and decided to take a chance and eat at a place called “The Pub.” So glad we did because it was delicious and the kids were able to get a really good vegan meal for a really good price. The lady who served us was from Australia and had been on Cozumel for several years. We enjoyed talking to her.

It was a rough ride.
Getting some distance on the heavy tourist area moving to where prices get reasonable.
Chips, salsa and guac……at the Pub.
Onion rings.
Happy kids are full kids.
Edie’s taco’s.
My fish and chips with tarter sauce.
A vegan something.

We left “The Pub” and got a taxi (40 pesos) to our new home. Once in our new home – a two bedroom, two bathroom place with no real kitchen facilities but had a kitchen sink – we relaxed and then Michael and I went down into the courtyard pool and took a swim. Actually, more like a stand as the water was so cold we didn’t get all the way in.

Arla retrieving hidden key to let us in.
Beautiful pool and fountain inside the interior courtyard.
Built in units in both bedrooms.
A mini kitchen in the bedroom.
TV and water in the kids room.
Nice toilet but no paper down it!
Master vanity and shower.
Floor to ceiling tile.
Both rooms had their own AC.
Pass through door between rooms.
The kitchen in the master bedroom.
Built-ins in the master.
Odd shaped shower in the kids room.

Later on, the owner showed up and we talked to him about a snorkeling tour and renting a car. He was able to work his business partners and we got a car for tomorrow and a snorkeling tour for the following day. That was our day. Hope yours was great!
