Tulum, Mexico – 1/17/2017

January 17, 2017 (Tuesday)

Weird night of sleeping. I know I didn’t sleep well because of the fear of Michael tripping and hitting his head. Also, the idea of not being able to put toilet paper down the toilet grossed me out. Mexico is an adventure. The weather was great – actually hot and humid. Can’t imagine being here in the summer when it’s really hot and humid.

We got up and got moving. Anxious to explore and see as much as possible. Our first stop was at a store and then on to one of the cenotes, Cenote Cristalino.

A water and vegetables run before hitting the cenotes.
I don’t have anything for scale but these are some of the biggest cabbages I have ever seen.

We LOVED it. We especially loved it because there were fish there that would work on your feet. I had seen it done on television and I know that people pay big bucks to have done for what we paid $5 for the entrance into the cenote. It tickled a little but it really worked and my feet felt so soft afterwards.

At the entrance to our first cenote.
The cenotes are beautiful in a completely rough and undeveloped way. There is minor work with railings, but the water is fresh and crystal clear. Fish and bottom are easily visible. Just wonderful.
I don’t know if it is original or replica. Cool looking though.
Grumpy wandering around.
It is so beautiful here. Hard to imagine the Mayans enjoying themselves here hundreds of years ago.
Fish exfoliating Edie’s feet.
Aaron and Arla jumped from up here. You can see the rocks and bottom clearly.

After Cenote Cristalino, we went to another one close by, Cenote Eden. Lovely. Both were very different. At Cenote Eden there were many more people, scuba divers, and people jumping down into the cenote from way up in a tree. There was one guy, I called him tattoo speedo guy, who must have jumped in five times while we were there. Fun.

Pretty woman looking around.
Diving platform in the back. Arla had donned the snorkel mask and was getting lots of pretty underwater scenes.
Pretty woman, Aaron and Arla. I stayed top side with the purses and back packs.
The water is cool. It is about 85 out and the water is probably about 75 and makes you gulp a few times when you get wet.

After a day spent in cenotes, we went into Playa del Carmen. What a fun town. We walked around the main drag (5th Street), talked to a timeshare guy who was lots of fun (Ramz), and ate dinner at a little place called La Taberna.

Delicious calamari.
We ate really well and really cheap.
Last night 3 security staff were shot dead here, at the Blue Parrot. 2 guests were trampled to death in the stampede to escape the lone gunman. News said it was a drug problem. News later said he was trying to bring a gun into the club and security stopped him and he opened fire. Local rumor was that protection was not paid to a cartel and it was a professional assault to prove private security does not work.

We walked and walked and walked. We walked down to the beach and saw where you can get a massage right on the beach for a really cheap price. The beach was really crowded but it had the chairs and canopies and hammocks. Way cool and way fun.

There are so many beautiful beaches in the Caribbean Riviera.
Aaron and Arla going to catch some sun.

We headed back to our room and told the manager that we would like to check out early due to safety concerns. They were totally okay with it (but still charged us a small cancellation fee). Aaron and Arla were able to get us a room in Playa del Carmen in a two bedroom, two bathroom condo near 5th Street (AirBnB).

That was our day. Hope yours was great!
