Austin to Fort Stockton, TX – 9/26/2016

September 26, 2016 (Monday)

Long drive today – about 350 miles. Yuck. We don’t like those type of days but sometimes they’re necessary. The drive today was to Fort Stockton, Texas – almost a half-way point to Alamogordo, our destination to visit my sister-in-law, Stacey. The weather was horrible – torrential rains and ugly dark skies. The temperature started out in the mid-70’s.

Rainy hot morning as we head out.

Texas and GPS are not made for each other. Sometimes you get directions for the road on top and sometimes it thinks you are on the bottom.

The frontage roads are one way in the direction of the highway and slide on and off in such a way that I and GPS are constantly, at best, unsure.

We didn’t stop for breakfast until we were way out of the Austin area as the traffic was pretty bad, even though we didn’t leave until 10:00 AM. What’s up with people? Don’t they know it’s raining cats and dogs and should be home?

The roads were good (except some pools of rain water) and we saw some beautiful country. It’s called Texas Hill Country and there were lots and lots of wineries and quaint small towns. I especially liked Fredericksburg. Really cute old stone buildings with balconies.

Fun old town on the way, Fredricksberg.

We also went by Johnson’s Ranch but, because of the rain, didn’t stop. After the beautiful Texas Hill Country, it was a lot of sage brush looking stuff, rocks, trees, and shrubbery. Michael and I are both glad to be leaving Texas, even though we finally found some pretty things here. You can take it and the weather; we’ll go back to California (soon). I must say that I was very grateful there was no lightening or thunder during the drive.

By the time we got into Fort Stockton the temperature had dropped to 53 degrees and we were COLD! And WET! And HUNGRY! Not many food choices in Fort Stockton so we opted to try out Pecos Roadhouse. Boy am I being negative today but we won’t be going back there any time soon.

We chose this placed on the theory that it would be like Logan's Roadhouse or Texas Roadhouse. It was a theory not confirmed.

Last chance to have a steak in Texas. It was fair.

(Must be the weather?) We got to our Priceline hotel room (La Quinta Inn, $73.49) and the desk clerk told us they had turned on the heaters for us. The room is OK and the bed was comfortable.
