Saltair, BC – 8/6/2016

August 6, 2016 (Saturday)

Got up to grey skies that looked like rain was coming. Jan and Caron made a beautiful breakfast. It started out with a fresh fruit bowl (even some of the blackberries we picked yesterday on our walk) topped with Greek yogurt.

After that it was bacon, eggs, toast, and some wonderful jam a friend had made. Delicious. We figured it would hold us for quite awhile.

The coffee was good too.

We left the house around 11:00 AM to go explore a little of the area. We stopped first at a friend of Jan and Caron’s we have met a couple of times and really enjoy – Peg. We had heard about her home for years but had never seen it. What a beautiful, gorgeous, stunning home on the ocean. How fortunate she is to live there with such spectacular views. She wasn’t home but Caron left a little note inviting her to dinner with us tonight at the Saltair Pub.

Our next stop was at a resort about 45 minutes away called the Yellow Point Lodge. Jan and Caron have friends who come here and rave about it. What a fun old fashioned place.  It appears pretty isolated but in a beautiful setting, down a long private road. It had the cutest little cabins with fireplaces, some with and some without toilets. You could also stay in the lodge. All meals are included in the price (and the prices are pretty reasonable). They ring a huge bell when the meals are ready and it’s like being in camp. We talked to one guy who had been coming for 22 years, and he said he was one of the newbies. How fun. Jan and Caron would love to stay there but they are totally booked months ahead. The lady said you have to call and keep calling to see if someone cancels as there is no waiting list. They don’t really use a computer to do the bookings, they use big white boards by month. How old fashioned and fun.

Next we went to an RCI timeshare resort in Parksville. Lovely. Jan and Caron have stayed here before and say the grounds are beautiful to walk. I also believe this is the place that Ron and Joan recently stayed at on their Canadian travels a month or so ago.

Just driving to the different places was beautiful. All the trees, ferns, water, deer – gorgeous. After the second resort we headed to the Parksville Sand Sculpting competition. How amazing it was. So many beautiful works of art and how sad that they won’t be there forever. To get in we walked by a large group of beach volleyball players, and then into a fenced-in area. They asked for a donation and then give you a token to vote for the sculpture you liked the best. This year the theme was about wings and flight. Some very creative people and interesting pieces.

We got a quick little bite to eat at a vendor in the park when we were done viewing the sand sculptures as it was now about 3:00 PM or so.

By this time it was raining so we headed back home after we ate. Michael and I fell asleep. Poor Jan drove and Caron navigated us safely home. When we got home, we were greeted by the neighbor’s adorable dog. One of the cutest we’ve seen, and so very friendly.

Lola, a great dog.

After we had gone in and been seated for just a little bit, Peg came by to see us. So glad we got to visit. We all left to go get dinner at the Saltair Pub. When we got there, it was Greek Night. Each of us got a souvlaki (either chicken, Greek, or shrimp), or moussaka. While we were visiting, Skinner joined us at the table for dinner, and another friend, Mark, stopped by to visit. What a great pub and a great group of people. So fun.

We went back home and visited for just a bit and then headed for bed. We told Jan and Caron we would try to not cause a disturbance. So enjoyed our time with such wonderful people.

That was our day. Hope yours was great!
