Prunedale to Oakhurst, California – 9/8/2015

September 8, 2015 (Tuesday)

We left around 11:00 AM – headed to Bass Lake, California. It’s a little over 150 miles and took about three hours. We were a little worried because there is a BIG fire in the Fresno area and we were concerned about the smoke.  We called and talked to someone at the Worldmark Bass Lake – who said they were getting a little bit of the smoke but it was okay, no warnings and they weren’t canceling any reservations.

Around Los Banos area, Michael and I were getting a little hungry. We opted to stop at a place we used to stop at and meet my mom when she was alive. It’s a Mexican Restaurant called Espana’s. Boy has it changed. The whole town of Los Banos has changed. It’s been many years since we’ve gone all the way through to the Central Valley area.  We usually turn to go Freeway 5.  Anyway, I digress – Espana’s menu and interior looked totally different. We both opted for the lunch buffet and were a little disappointed that it was very bland, not our regular spicy Mexican food. Sure brought back some good memories of my mom and the times we would meet everyone there.

Los Espana's is a nice dining area, typical central valley construction with big windows and over sized eves to shelter the room from direct sunlight in the heat of the day.

We had the buffet, but no pictures of the food. We ate, but it was bland.

We stopped for gas and then headed into Oakhurst, where we got a few groceries for our stay.

When we hit the foothills the smoke was getting thick.

Then we headed to Bass Lake (just a few miles away). We got to our “home” for the next few days and talked to the front desk person, John. The smoke was pretty heavy and he explained they were getting smoke from the fire a ways away (over 100,000 acres), plus there was a new fire in the Yosemite Valley that was causing more smoke in the area.

The unit itself was very different than most Worldmark units – it was an upstairs/downstairs with 2-1/2 bathrooms. Very nice but older. We liked it.

We were both pretty tired so we just got comfortable (aka pajamas) and lazed around for the night. That was our day. Hope yours was great!
