Denver to Alamosa, Colorado – 4/10/2015
April 10, 2015 (Friday) Happy Birthday Brother Dave!
Looked like it was going to be a nice day when we woke up. We were up and out of our room around 10:00 AM. We decided to drive back to ModMarket for breakfast since we so enjoyed it yesterday. I asked if they had any of these restaurants in California and was told only in Texas and Colorado. I think they would do wonderful in California as they’re all about fresh ingredients. Michael had an egg dish and I had a scrambled egg dish. We both loved their bread.
We left and headed towards Alamosa, Colorado, about a 250 mile drive. We had to first stop at the Walmart and pick up Michael’s medication. When we got to the Walmart, he was told that the prescription was ready in California, not here in Denver. We’ll have to deal with that when we get to Durango.
The traffic out of Denver was pretty bad, as well as the roads being rough. I drove and was getting a little upset with all the drivers being so rude and passing on the right, or even passing on the shoulder. Crazy. (One of my pet peeves is people passing on the right when the traffic is moving good and they just happen to want to go super fast.)
We didn’t stop until we had to get gas in Walsenburg, Colorado. We laughed because there were two “hippie” type guys near the road who were wanting money. One was singing and playing the guitar but he had a really bad voice. I was wondering if he got any money from his singing or not.
The terrain changed from high desert to mountains (around 10,000 feet) back to high desert, to small trees, to meadows, to just about everything. We saw patches of snow in the higher elevations. When we were about 25 miles outside of Alamosa, we saw signs for the Great Sand Dunes National Park and decided to go check it out. It was about 15 miles off the main road. We stopped at the visitor’s center to see how the sand dunes were made – much like the White Sands National Park, water, wind and topology. We drove to the dunes and wanted to walk on them (like we did at White Sands National Park) but you had to cross a small river. At this point it was pretty cold (high 40’s) so we opted not to take off our shoes and socks and cross the river. Instead we just enjoyed the view from the wooden platform.
We got into Alamosa and drove into town to have dinner. We settled on a Chinese restaurant and it was really good. It was called Hunan Restaurant and Sushi Bar. We ordered our usual – fried rice, wonton soup, and lemon chicken. Excellent. It had been a pretty stressful day of driving so I ordered a strawberry margarita for myself. (Michael drove back to the hotel from the restaurant.)
We got to the hotel – Days Inn, and into our room, which was quite large and nice. The bed is very comfortable. We are hoping to do our taxes and get caught up on everything before long.
Mike here. Net was okay, got some pictures uploaded.
That was our day. Hope yours was great!
