Fisherman’s Wharf, Monterey, California – 8/19/2014
AUGUST 19, 2014 (Tuesday)
Michael got up and went to the dentist office. (He actually went yesterday but discovered it was the wrong day. At least he got the time right. I think we’re getting old and senile.) He came back around 11:30 PM.
After the Dentist Michael had Lexie’s car washed.
Got home and opened up a birthday package from brother John that Michael had picked up from the post office. What a wonderful and generous man he is. We now need to learn how to use a GoPro!
We hit the road again around 1:00 PM. Decided to go have lunch first. We were undecided if we wanted El Torito on Cannery Row, or Crazy Horse Restaurant on Munras. Michael decided on the Crazy Horse Restaurant. They’re pretty famous for their huge salad bar. It was good. A little bit of anything you can imagine. I was told once by my friend Elsa (who is quite the foodie and knows all about Monterey) that it’s best to go there for lunch and not dinner, as it’s fresher. Makes sense.
After lunch we headed to the wharf. Quite crowded – good thing. The weather is overcast and kinda cold. Glad we brought our jackets. Part of the wharf parking was closed because they were putting very expensive auction cars into their trailers after the auction this last weekend. Lots and lots of nice old cars. We asked the security guard about getting in to take pictures (actually tried to funny bribe him with $5.00 and that we could even go up to $6.00 cash) and were told that during the auction weekend, it’s free some days. We made a mental note for next year to go see the auction cheaply or free. We also talked to a photographer who was inside the gate. He said he got in because he was picking up a car for his boss and brought his camera because it’s just too much fun. We didn’t need to spend all the money to go into the Concourse d’Elegance – just head to the wharf and see all the neat cars.
We walked down to the glass bottom boat, after strolling the wharf for awhile. We were disappointed and surprised they only take cash ($14.00 per adult), which we didn’t have on us. They told us there was an ATM machine down by the Old Fisherman’s Grotto Restaurant. We walked down to it but it was out of order so we didn’t get to go on the glass bottom boat today. We’ll try it again another day. We decided to just walk around down to where the sea otters, harbor seals, sea lions and assorted birds were hanging out. Fun. There was one very large sea lion that seemed to be circling a large group of sea lions and screaming at them. Not sure why he was so upset.
We left and walked back down towards the cars. Michael and I commented that we’re surprised and disappointed in the amount of transient/homeless people panhandling on the wharf. So sad. We hadn’t really seen that before. Some were rather aggressive. Usually Monterey PD is more proactive to get them out of town, or moved away from the wharf.
Drove home and we’re tired. That was our day. Hope yours was great!
