Victoria, BC to Port McNeill, BC – 8/6/2014

AUGUST 6, 2014 (Wednesday)

Had to check out of the Worldmark. So sad to leave it and leave Victoria but we’re excited to be going to Cormorant Island and seeing Michael’s favorite Native art. The drive was about 500 kilometers (approximately 300 miles). It took about 6 hours. There was some construction going on, which slowed us down quite a bit.

Goodbye Worldmark, see you next year.

The drive is quite beautiful. We didn’t see any bear or elk, but we did see some ravens, stellar jays, and one deer. We stopped for lunch in Campbell River, and again at a rest stop about an hour south of Port McNeill.

There was a young woman with a bike at the rest stop. We got to talking to her and she was amazing. Her name is Kim and she took the ferry down from Anchorage to Port Hardy. She’s going (by bike) to Washington D.C., and then going to Australia. She’s doing this by herself. She said this morning she heard a bear outside her tent and so she turned on her cell to Lady Gaga really loud. We wished her luck and were quite amazed she’s doing this. Quite the brave soul.

We got into our hotel, Haida Way Motel, around 5:30 PM. It’s not worth the price (around $250.00 for two nights), but it’s a hotel in the area we want to be.

We decided to drive up to Port Hardy (about 25 miles) and see if we could see any bears on the bear highway. Nothing. However, once we got into Port Hardy, down by the harbor, we saw about thirty eagles and many more ravens either playing or fighting up in the air. It was amazing to see so many beautiful birds in their natural habitat. We also saw two eagles sitting up in a tree. So cool. Loved it and loved seeing all them flying up above us so close. No bears though. Maybe tomorrow.

We drove back to our motel and had dinner at the little cafe in the lobby. Quite good food and reasonably priced. We were kinda wishing Lexi was here because there are so many good looking young men around here. Looks like they’re either fishermen, firemen or lumbermen.

It’s almost 9:00 PM and still plenty of light outside. Yep, we’re up north. That was our day. Hope yours was great!

The internet is painfully slow, so I’ll add photo’s when we return to civilization.
