Castroville, California – 7/26/2014
JULY 26, 2014 (Saturday)
Before I talk about today’s outings, let me tell you about what Lexi and I did last night. A friend/former co-worker at the pharmacy gave me two tickets to go see James Durbin. She knew how much I liked him and how I had followed him on American Idol. I think I really liked him for two reasons, he has Tourette’s Syndrome and his story is amazing in that when he sings, it disappears; and he’s from our area (Santa Cruz). He was voted off when it was down to the final four – but he still got his hometown visit. (Lexi and I went and loved it.)
So Lexi and I left around 5:30 PM. The plan was to go find the Rio Theater, get parking, and walk to dinner somewhere close. The show didn’t start until 8:00 PM. We found a parking pretty close to the theater and walked around. People were already lined up. Â I had read on Yelp about an Italian Place, Lillian’s Italian Kitchen, that was close. When we tried to go inside to eat, we were told the earliest available time would be 7:30 PM. We’ll have to make reservations and try it again sometime. We ended up about a block away at The Crepe Place. I was surprised at how good it was. Also, we ate outside in a beautiful garden setting. Loved it. Perfect warm evening for it.
When we finished dinner, we walked across the street to stand in line for the show. By now it was about 7:30 PM. We weren’t sure how the seating worked but knew it wouldn’t be good because we were towards the end of the line outside. When we got to the door we were told we had seating up front. Nice. (Thanks Elsa!) We didn’t have the primo front row center (because we were late in line), but we had fourth row side seating. Very good.
The show itself was fabulous. A little loud for this old woman but….I loved it. He was paying tribute to Led Zeppelin and the Doors. He did five or six costume changes, and there was even a marriage proposal by one of the bad members. In the background on the huge wall was the 60’s type psychedelic stuff going on. James has such an amazing voice and can do anything. He told us how he got the idea to do the show. He said he was doing a UFO show in the Middle East and brought a book with him about The Doors. He said it came to him to do the tribute and he called some buddies in Santa Cruz to get it going. So glad he did. Whenever he’s doing a show in the area, I’d like to go.
That was our evening. Hope yours was great!
Now for today!
Michael has been concerned about a fairly minor medical condition so we decided to go to Urgent Care and get it checked out. While we were driving into Salinas, we saw a really neat old car show in Castroville. Fun.
When we got into town to the Urgent Care, the wait was 2-1/2 hours so we decided to leave and Michael will go back early in the morning.
We drove into Sand City by taking Highway 68 and then heading over to the Costco. Lovely drive and glad we took it because when we took Highway 1 back, the traffic was horrible and backed up for miles. We went to Office Depot first. Looking for a local map to show the AirBnB people how to get to Monterey, Santa Cruz, and Salinas easily. Nothing there. We then walked over to Costco and did some shopping. We originally wanted just some vitamins but ended up spending over $300.00 on other things we decided we just couldn’t live without. We also had lunch there. We’re really liking the turkey provolone sandwich.
We are now back home, just vegging out. It’s still a hot (74) and beautiful day here. Not sure what we’ll do for dinner but…probably leftovers. That was our day. Hope yours was great!
